I had to take my time to compose this image. I wanted to capture the symmetry of the hills in the background and the color and shapes of the smooth rocks in the foreground. To achieve this I used my 16mm lens, set my tripod very low and pointed the camera down so that the centre of the shot is about 1.5 meters in-front of the camera. The low height and angle of the camera makes the rocks in the foreground stand out and the wide angle lens opens the image up and allowed me to capture the hills in the background.

Hello Mauao Exhibition
Words: Major Toms
We’re going to hold our first ever Hello Mauao exhibition at 7pm on Saturday 26th May at Major Toms. It’ll be a great opportunity for folks to check out our favorite images from the past year, and finally you’ll be able to see them in all their glory rather than 800px wide on the internet, and I’ll have a few new photos you haven’t seen yet. We will have mounted canvas prints available for purchase on the night. The good folks at Pacifico have provided us with a few beers, and I’ll see if mum can knock up some chips and onion dip or something. So come on down and say g’day, have a beer and check out a few pretty pictures, it’ll be fun.
Movie: Good for Nothing
MADE IN NEW ZEALAND. Good for Nothing is an adventurous romp following an odd romance set in the sweeping Old West. An epic independent feat written and directed by first-time director Mike Wallis it celebrates the Western genre with an interesting twist.
Check it out!
“One of the principal glories of the film is the score by John Psathas, in which genuine sweep and poetry are combined with affectionate send-ups of Ennio Morricone. It would be a major achievement for an experienced film composer; as a first film score, it’s little short of astonishing.” — Jim Svejda, Classical KUSC (Los Angeles)

Location: Maketu Estuary.
Pipi gathers at sunset…I like to have an idea of the image that Im trying to create before I head out on a photo shoot but there wasn’t any planing involved in this image. I was waiting for my fish and chips at Maketu and notice the sun set colors so I grabbed my camera out of the car and went for a short walk up the estuary. I was trying to photograph a flock of birds silhouetted against the orange sky when three people walked into the water to gather pipi. Normally I don’t photograph people in my landscapes but they added to the shot so I grabbed this of images of them.

The Black Seeds – Dust and Dirt
We just wanted to put a holla out to our friends The Black Seeds. Their new album Dust and Dirt is smokin’ with monster musicianship and some fresh sounds. They finally found and created a studio they could call their own, giving them heaps more time to flex those musical muscles. Makes all the difference. Happy days! Album smashing the charts on Itunes. Go get it.
Dylan Israel: I’m outa money
Words: Jack Maverick
A couple months ago I put up a music page for Dylan Israel and said he could be the one to watch in 2012. I just had a listen to a new track he’s put out. Lend an ear and listen closely, he has something to say, and he makes it count.

Save Sopher Reserve (Brewers in the Park)
As some of you may already know, those cheeky Tauranga City Councillors are now trying to sell off a much loved green space and the Mount’s premier concert venue, Brewers in the Park. The irony is that Mr Sopher GAVE this land to the people and now they’re trying to profit from a beautiful green space that has brought music and culture to the Bay. We have until Friday 5pm to stop them.
You just have to visit this page and fill in a comment under Topic 1. Make the heading Save Sopher Reserve. As for the comment, it’s up to you. I’m thinking they can sell that bowling club they poured many mad millions into and fund their dodgy finance deals that way, but leave music and culture alone!
And here is a link to the Draft Ten Year Plan, if you can stomach it.
A touch of gold by Owen Dippie
In a town run by a morgue warmed up isn’t is just awesome to see street art still alive and kicking? This latest work of art by Owen Dippie is just breathtaking. Its a mural replica of a portrait of ‘Ina Te Papatahi, Nga Puhi’, painted by C.F. Goldie in 1902. Now standing tall at Willow street, Tauranga. Class!

Location: Mount Cook
I was lucky enough to get a free flight over the Southern Alps in a friends Cessna 182. We flew from Christchurch to Hokitika then down to Haast and back to Christchurch via Mount Cook. It was a great way to see some spectacular scenery.
This was taken on the Western side of Mount Cook looking South West.

Location: Lake Wakatipu. Otago.
I was visiting friends in Queenstown and wanted to capture a moody image of Lake Wakatipu while I was there so I went for a drive towards Glenorchy during some bad weather. I was drawn to this image by the cloud hanging around the mountain tops and the stillness of the lake. I pulled off the road into a small gravel area and set up my tripod and camera and got the shot.

Freedom to Sing…one year on
Words: Tiki Taane
It was a year ago today that i was arrested, handcuffed & detained in jail after singing NWA’s “F@#k Da Police” at my Tauranga concert. I was charged with “Disorderly Behavior likely to cause violence”, to which I pleaded NOT quilty.
Five months after the arrest the Police contacted me wanting to talk about dropping the charge. We had 2 mediation sessions in which a deal was finally tabled, and on the 5th of September 2011 the charge was dropped. The Police released a press statement admitting that it was all a “miss-understanding”…. Big ups to my management, lawyers, private investigator & most of all the FANS..!!!
Onwards & upwards….
